On Monday, the House Education Committee approved private school voucher legislation under House Bill 1800 (Rep. Turzai, R-Allegheny) with a narrow vote of 13-12. As expected, the bill is being positioned for a vote on the House floor later this week.

House Bill 1800 establishes a pilot voucher program for students in the Harrisburg School District, which entered state receivership in June. The legislation clearly sets a precedent for expansion in other districts and is yet another push to privatize education in Pennsylvania. In fact, the bill was amended by the committee to require the voucher program to continue indefinitely after the school exits a receivership. We need to work together now to block passage of House Bill 1800 and this latest attempt to sell vouchers. Please contact your representatives immediately and tell them to reject vouchers and vote NO on this bill.
