Substitute
Teacher Compensation 2002-03
Many public school districts throughout
the commonwealth are experiencing difficulty finding daily substitutes.
PSBA Research Services conducted a study of the problem during
the 2000-01 school year (see PSBA Bulletin, October 2001, Vol.
65, No. 5). Because of continued interest in this issue,
PSBA Research Services has compiled 2002-03 substitute teacher
compensation rates to update the 2000-01 information.
Based on 452 responding
school districts (90% of the 500 Pennsylvania public school districts),
the average daily substitute per diem pay rate is $75. The
most frequent pay rate (mode) is $70 per day, and the median pay
rate is $75 per day. The minimum reported rate is $50 per
day, and the maximum is $128. On average, substitute teachers
in Pennsylvania are paid $75 per day.
